Tourism

You need a very good excuse to go to sleep at night in Łódź. Clubbing is one of the most reasonable alternatives. Pub-crawling will nowhere be more pleasurable than here. Only in our city the most important clubs are located around one main street and its cross streets. You do not need to take a taxi, wander around and ask strangers for directions.

You should just find yourself in Piotrkowska Street. You can feel the party atmosphere in every corner - the main part of the Łódź representative street (the promenade) is a 2 km long stretch of pubs, clubs, disco clubs and restaurants. Niche establishments coexist with loud disco clubs, and modern designed interiors are located next to cosy cellars. There are places for everybody - jazzmen, actors, visual artists, bikers, salseros, students, gay people, athletes, teenagers and keen club-goers.

Łódź Kaliska pub is at the top of the list of the most cult establishments in Łódź. This the first place where the residents of Łódź invite their friends. Despite the fact that the pub occupies three floors, several balconies and beer gardens, it is really difficult to find a free table at weekends. The establishment of the most famous Łódź artistic group, similarly to its projects, will surprise you with numerous contrasts. The atmosphere of the artistic bohemia coexists here with the modern clubbing style, weekend events are organised in line with sophisticated concerts and performances, and the pub itself is the "museum" of the Łódź Kaliska art (here, you can see the same famous people on posters on the wall and sitting at the bar next to you). The whole sensation is enhanced by such out-of-the-ordinary elements as the "drunk" table, a bending bar-top, famous two-way mirrors in the ladies' room or the post covered with pink fur. It would be just inappropriate not to drop in.

While leaving, you may visit Cafe Foto for interesting pictures and quieted atmosphere. The Szafa pub offers a similar style.

Another attractive place for artists is Przechowalnia, run by Andrzej Poniedzielski and Elżbieta Adamiak. This famous cellar is a meeting point for actors, musicians and students of the Film School. You can enjoy here good concerts, recitals, performances and cabaret shows.

The oldest and still active club is Siódemki (77 Piotrkowska Street). It was established in the 1950s. "Teatr 77" used to operate here, Roman Polański used to frequent this place and lots of celebrities, including Michał Urbaniak, Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski, Tomasz Stańko, Urszula Dudziak, Wojciech Młynarski and many others, performed here. Nowadays, a cabaret and a political cafe is established here, and at night you may have fun in the music club and pub serving over 150 types of alcohol.

The Jazzga club is the Mecca for jazzmen. Apart from young debuting groups, the international legends of alternative music perform here, which makes the club famous not only in Poland. When one of the dwellers wanted it shut down, a letter supporting the club was signed by almost 9 thousand people, including such celebrities as Marcin Dymiter, Mikołaj Trzaska, Wojtek Kucharczyk, Kostas Georgakopulos, Adam Pierończyk, Piotr Pawlak or Bernard Maseli. Jazzga also hosts the participants of several international festivals including the Festival of Dialogue of Four Cultures, Comic Books Festival and Fotofestiwal.

Decent concerts in Piotrkowska Street and the neighbourhood are organized in Funaberia 2, Lizard King, Stereo Krogs (where you can dance to the music from the 60s, 70s and 80s). A bit farther away, there is Dekompresja, Wytwórnia or Bagdad Cafe (a cult club opened in 1990 in a historical manufacturer's villa).

Those into more peaceful way of spending the evening will find their haven in Sofa, Biblioteka or the elegant Klub Piotrkowska 97 located in an Art Nouveau tenement house. This establishment includes 11 retro-style rooms, combining metal, glass and timber, and a glazed, 2 storey beer garden with the view to the promenade. On offer you can find: exquisite cuisine, music and dance parties. It is no wonder then that you could meet there such celebrities as David Lynch, Aleksander Kwaśniewski or Jan Machulski.

If you like good beer, visit Peron 6. In the cellars and dark interiors, you may sip at drinks from most European countries and more exotic locations, e.g. Thailand, India, Japan, Jamaica, Cuba or Israel.

In the city centre, there are lots of places where you can dance to good music. Black music is played in Blu and Flow clubs. Club rhythms, electro and house (mixed with snobbish vibes) are the specialties served in KoKoo, Czekolada, Soda or Rezydencja. Together with the recently opened Oranżada, they show a fine example of professionally designed, exclusive and sophisticated interiors. Typical modern disco clubs for numerous guests with a well-thought design are Heaven and Elektrownia (located in Manufaktura). Fabryka has been active for many years, however, this venue is mostly frequented by teenagers. Cabaret is a more sophisticated place: entry for at least 21-year-olds, formal dress, strip-tease, two-level interior with balconies, platforms and winding stairs.

Those who prefer "sporty" evenings to parties may choose from a wide selection of bowling alleys and pool tables, the biggest of which are located in Manufaktura, the Silver Screen cinema, Prestige and Frame clubs.

In the city of four cultures, one may also find a lot of "national" establishments. If you like latino clubs, i.e. salsa disco clubs, African, Brazilian and Cuban nights with dance performances, you should visit, e.g. Mojito Latino Club, Studio Latino and Salsa Project. You can smoke Arabian hookah in Marrakesh and the Habibi club (in Manufaktura) and you can take in the renowned Italian temper in Porto Bello. During weekend disco parties, professional dancers rock on barrels. On the other hand, the best Irish atmosphere is associated with some of the most recognisable Łódź pubs, namely the Irish Pub and Dublin Pub. Apart from beer and drinks from the Green Island, you can taste there Irish cuisine, dance, sing karaoke and participate in original theme events.

Even this superficial overview of Łódź night-time attractions should discourage you from going to sleep. See for yourself why Łódź is generally perceived as the clubbing capital of Poland.
