The industry in the XIX century in Łódź was mostly created by German factory owners. One of them was Karol Wilhelm Scheibler, who was engaged in cotton production. In a very short period he came into a fortune, which enabled him to create his empire - a city in the city. The richest Factory Owner in Łódź was called "the king of cotton". On the other hand, Jews were occupied with the trade and the craft. However, among them there were also great factory owners. One of them was Izrael Kalmanowicz Poznański, who had been trying for all his life to equal Scheibler. He could never catch up with "the king of cotton".
